The Crucible/John Proctor Is the Villain

Service Description

This laboratory explores the enduring relevance of Arthur Miller's The Crucible through a contemporary lens, pairing it with Kimberly Belflower's John Proctor Is the Villain. Together, these works create a dialogue between past and present, examining themes of power, morality, and the shifting interpretation of historical narratives. Participants will engage in scene work that emphasizes textual precision, rhetorical clarity, and emotional immediacy in English. The workshop will juxtapose excerpts from both plays, highlighting the ways in which perspective and authorship shape our understanding of canonical material. The event begins with a 30–35 minute curated performance, presenting a sequence of scenes drawn from these two works. Following this, the format shifts: the performance space becomes a working studio. Through a guided process of live coaching, rehearsal, and refinement, the material is revisited in real time. The director engages directly with the performers, exploring adjustments in language, physicality, vocal expression, and intention. As the work is re-examined, the audience gains insight into the techniques and decision-making processes that underpin professional-level performance. It creates a dynamic exchange between artist and audience, in which the act of rehearsal itself becomes a form of performance.
